Yiwu is one of the “exhibition cities” with the greatest potential for development in China. It is located in the geographical center of Zhejiang Province and the subtropical monsoon zone, Yiwu features a mild and moist weather in four distinctive seasons with an annual temperature around 17℃. With a total area of 1,105 square kilometers, the city has a total population of over 1.7 million.
In a report on China’s development jointly released by the United Nations, the World Bank, Morgan Stanley and other authoritative organizations, Yiwu small commodity market is recognized as the “biggest wholesale market across the globe”. The Yiwu market has a total area of 2.6 million square meters with more than 58,000 booths, covering 400,000-odd commodities in 1,900 categories and 43 trades.
Yiwu have more than 80 exhibitions and fairs in the last year, including those held by 15 national industrial associations and Chinese and foreign exhibition organizers. The China Yiwu International Commodities Fair which is held from Oct. 22 to Oct. 26 annually, is the largest exhibition in Yiwu. Besides, the China Yiwu Cultural Products Trade Fair is one of the cultural fairs mainly supported by Zhejiang Provincial Government.
At present, nearly 10,000 foreign businessmen from over 100 countries and regions are residing in Yiwu, engaged in the commodity trade business. Representative offices set up by overseas companies have reached 1,072. Yiwu has established economic relations and trade with 212 countries and regions across the world. Over 60% of the Yiwu market is export-oriented.
In 2006, more than 200 foreign government delegations visited yiwu, including those led by over 20 ministerial-level officials. And up till now, three foreign heads of state had visited Yiwu.
